Building a sustainable future
Sustainability
Our business was built around finding sustainable solutions to support the three waters (drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure services) and ultimately keeping our country’s waterways clean and our communities safe — both for today and for future generations.
Hynds has adopted a sustainability framework that focuses on three strategic pillars; the planet (our natural environment), people (our people but also our wider communities and stakeholders) and products (innovating and building resilience into what we do to meet the needs of future generations).
Our Sustainability Framework helps guide our efforts in tackling some of New Zealand’s and the world’s most complex challenges like the effects of climate change and scarcity of resources.

Hynds’ Commitment to Sustainable Water Solutions
Water is life. Tackling excesses or the lack of water and ensuring water quality are some of the main challenges the world will have to face. Since 1973, as a New Zealand-founded and owned company, Hynds has taken its commitment to the environment seriously through the products we create and the talented people we employ. Our people are among the most knowledgeable in the industry about environmental and stormwater management.
Hynds has a 100-year business strategy which includes a commitment to remaining family-owned. We plan to be here for the next 100 years and beyond, so we want to make sure that not only the business is in good shape, but that Aotearoa is too. We want to ensure that the products and solutions we supply today, are still fit for purpose and achieving all that they need to for decades to come.

Carbon Emissions Reduction
Addressing the effects of climate change is a huge challenge that we all face. Hynds believes that addressing climate change will make us better off and is committed to New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions economy. Hynds has committed to a 42% reduction in Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) carbon emissions by 2032. This target is based on the goal to limit warming by 1.5˚C and is aligned with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
Hynds’ carbon footprint is dominated by Scope 3 emissions. We have therefore also committed to engage with our key supply partners to adopt science-based targets.
The Hynds Group’s organisational carbon footprint was first completed by ThinkstepANZ in 2021 and is tracked annually.
The carbon footprint calculations and assumptions were based on ISO 14064-1: 2018 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol).
Product Carbon Footprints
Hynds is committed to being transparent about the sustainability of our products. We support the work of the Life Cycle Association of New Zealand to promote good practices around life cycle assessments and life cycle thinking.
Hynds is currently developing Environmental Product Declarations for our standard product ranges. While this is underway, if you require product sustainability information for your project then please contact sustainability@hynds.co.nz.
