To help to manage the stormwater runoff coming from the bridge connecting Milldale to Millwater and Silverdale, Hynds, Mott MacDonald and HEB worked together through the design of a channel rain garden. 6 units were designed, 5 of these units were 9.8m in length and the other was 6.7m in length.
Collaboration between Hynds, Mott MacDonald and HEB resulted in designing and installing a perfect solution for managing stormwater runoff coming off the bridge, thus protecting neighbouring residential areas from flooding in the near future.
Hynds Channel Rain Garden Surround is a sound precast structure that allows for stormwater to be effectively attenuated and treated. Stormwater is directed into this structure where it soaks into a media filter and gets treated. The Channel Rain Garden surrounds for this project were designed to treat and manage stormwater runoff from the bridge. It treats the stormwater runoff by removing pollutants such as sediments, hydrocarbons and trash by allowing the water to be filtered through plants and vegetation before it goes into our stormwater network or waterways.
Some attributes of the channel rain garden are as follows:
- Better suited for long continuous runs, such as subdivisions (resulting in a bigger treatment and retention volumes)
- Pre-formed shapes make it much quicker and safer than other systems
- Able to retrofit into existing sites
- Well suited for Hynds Stormwater pre-treatment systems
- Minimal surface exposure and blends into surroundings
- Improves water quality by filtering out pollutants
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Preserves native vegetation
- Provides localized stormwater and flood control
- Easy to maintain after establishment
